To Mrs Jeanne McDonnell and EuGene's family, I hope this message reaches you. When I met Paul Berry this May in Japan, I received Eugene's recent work with his own signature addressed to me and I couldn't imagine his passing is so early. Now I remember three things about him; 1. When I first attended APL conference in Helsinki with my family first time after I retired from IBM, Eugene recognized me comming closer to a group of APL people standing, he shouted "Saigusa's here". 2. When Jeanne and Eugene toured Japan, you honored to have stayed at my humble mountain house and left the names of both of you in white caulk on the balckboard of the class room, which had been kept untouched until recently when I erroneously erased it. APL Association of Japan have a summer camp in my place every year, and as I passed the news of Eugene's passing, to them, they immediately returned a message that it shouldn't have been erased, with the words of condolences. 3. Eugene was always kind to me by introducing me to the APL core members. I am deeply thankful to him for me to have been able to attend and have a lengthy conversation with Ken Iverson in person when Eugene arranged Ken's bithday party at your house. I learned Eugene's background for the first time in Wikipedia Today, and I was so deeply impressed by the seeming remote educational background for one of the great leaders of computer science. His name Eugone happens to have the same sound as YuJin (=Close Friend) in Japanese, and I remember he had always been a very considerate and kind friend to every body around him and will stay so for ever. Please take care of your health. Kyosuke Saigusa at mountain house.
